Director, Institute for Meteorological Training & Research(IMTR)

Mr. Walter Nganyi

Walter E. Aswa Nganyi is the Director of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (WMO-RTC/IMTR). Mr. Nganyi holds a Master of Science Degree in Agriculture Meteorology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology both from the University of Nairobi. He also has a post graduate diploma in Disaster Management from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. 

 

Mr. Nganyi joined the Kenya Meteorological Department in 1989 and has risen through the ranks in various capacities within the Department from Meteorologist III at the National Meteorological Centre, Agromet Section, Customer Services Section, Computer Services Division, Kakamega County Director of Meteorological Services, Senior Meteorologist, Research & Development, joining the administrative arm of the Department as an Assistant Director, Senior Assistant Director and Deputy Director.

 

 

The Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) is a branch of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, charged with the responsibility of training personnel in meteorology, hydrology and related geo-sciences in the Anglophone countries of Africa. The WMO RTC-Nairobi, generally referred to as the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR), has two components:

 

  1. The Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) located on the grounds of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD)

 

  1. The University of Nairobi, College of Biological and Physical Sciences, Department of Meteorology located at Chiromo Campus.
