What We Do

Weather Warnings and Alerts

KMD monitors atmospheric conditions around the clock to provide early warnings of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds—helping save lives and reduce damage.

Daily Weather Forecasts

We issue up-to-date daily forecasts to help the public and key sectors plan for immediate weather conditions, from temperature and rainfall to wind and visibility.

5-Day and 7-Day Forecasts

Our extended outlooks provide a broader view of upcoming weather patterns, supporting preparedness for both individuals and institutions in weather-sensitive sectors.

County-Level Forecasts

Tailored weather forecasts are available for each of Kenya’s counties, enabling localized planning and timely action at the community and county levels.

Lake Victoria Fishing Forecasts

We provide specialized forecasts for Lake Victoria to promote the safety of fishing communities by warning of hazardous conditions and guiding daily activity on the lake.

Projects

Several initiatives are underway to strengthen weather forecasting and dissemination in Kenya. These include the modernization of observation networks, capacity building for forecasters, and the development of digital platforms for timely alerts and forecasts. Projects supported by national and international partners are also enhancing early warning systems, improving public access to weather information, and fostering the use of innovative tools such as mobile apps and social media to reach more users effectively.
