WMO/RTC IMTR, Nairobi hosts the SWFP Training Desk Workshop

Kenya Meteorological Department in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization through the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems project has organized the Severe Weather Forecasting Training Desk Workshop at the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research IMTR, Nairobi. The workshop will be held from Monday, 18 August 2025 to Friday, 22 August 2025.

The objective of the workshop is to train officers working in the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services from Djiobouti, Somalia and Sudan, to improve their engagement within the East Africa region and enhance regional guidance products by sharing local knowledge. The training desk provides a platform for exchange of experiences between forecasters working in the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services severe weather forecasting desks.

Participants to the workshop are from Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia and Sudan. The Workshop was officially opened by the Director, Disaster Risk Reduction, Multi Hazard Early Warning Systems Office and Public Services Branch, Dr. Cyrille Honore. Present at the opening ceremony was the Ag. Director, KMD, Mr. Edward Muriuki, Deputy Director Education and Training, Mr. Charles Mwangi and Assistant Director Corporate Communications and Relations, Mr. Peter Masika.

The Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) initiative is a financial mechanism which funds projects in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to establish risk-informed early warning services.  CREWS works directly with countries to increase the availability of, and access to, early warning systems.
