Weather, Water, Climate for socio-economic development
The mandate of the KMD is to provide timely early warning weather and climate information for safety of life, protection of property and conservation of the natural environment. This mandate is anchored on Executive Orders on the structure and organization of the Government of Kenya and the World Meteorological Organization Convention. The Convention also recognizes the NMHSs to be the single and authoritative voice and source on matters of severe weather and extreme climate events among WMO’s member states.

Mr. Muriuki a career Meteorologist at KMD holds a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Engineering from University of Dar es Salaam, PG Diploma (Hydrology) and BSc (Maths and Meteorology) both from the University of Nairobi. He joined the Kenya Meteorological Department in 1991 and has worked in various technical and administrative capacities within the Department including Senior Assistant Director in various divisions, Deputy Director, Technical and Support Services, the Principal of the World Meteorological Organization/Regional Training Centre (Institute for Meteorological Training and Research), Nairobi and Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services branch before his appointment as Ag. Director of Meteorological Services.

A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Water Resources from UNESCO-IHE Delft, the Netherlands and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
He has over 25 years of work experience at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) having worked at various technical sections in the Department. He has risen through ranks to a position of Deputy Director.
