The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), in partnership with WMO, FAO, ICPAC, the Adaptation Fund, and local communities in Taita Taveta County, implemented the Agricultural Climate Resilience Enhancement Initiative (ACREI) from 2018 to 2021. The project aimed to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable smallholder farmers, agro-pastoralists, and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa by developing and applying climate adaptation strategies. Through Participatory Scenario Planning (PSPs), farmers and stakeholders were engaged in understanding and interpreting climate forecasts, making them locally relevant for agricultural decision-making, with support from government agencies and the media.

As part of this initiative, KMD and its partners translated key meteorological terms from English into Kiswahili, the national and widely spoken local language. The resulting Kiswahili meteorological dictionary (Kamusi) is intended to improve access, understanding, and adoption of weather and climate information at the community level. Beyond Taita Taveta, the dictionary serves as a model for similar efforts across Kenya and the region, including potential translations into other local languages, ultimately promoting better climate services uptake and resilience-building in vulnerable communities.
